Helpful Tips for Taking Your Cat to the Vet

If you have a kitten or cat, it is important for you to take them to the veterinarian regularly. If you get a new kitten, you should take it to the vet for a check-up, to get its vaccinations, and to start with preventive care. You will later need to take your cat to the vet for things like getting spayed or neutered, getting additional vaccinations when needed, and more. Plus, obviously, you'll want to take your cat to the vet if it is showing signs of illness or injury. As a cat owner who will need to take your cat to the vet in a variety of situations, you might find this advice useful.

Choose the Right Veterinarian

If you haven't done so yet, you should take the time to find the right veterinarian to provide care for your cat. Some cat owners choose to look for cat-specific veterinarians, which is an option. It isn't necessary, though, as long as you find a veterinarian who provides care for domesticated animals and who has a good reputation. You may want to ask some of the pet owners that you know for recommendations.

Make Sure Your Cat Is Used to Being Handled

It's important to get your cat used to being handled for a number of reasons, including the fact that it can help with veterinary visits. Your veterinarian will need to be able to pick up your cat and touch it all over its body. It's good to get your cat used to this by picking up your cat's feet and rubbing it all over. You may also want to get your cat used to being in a cat carrier and riding in the car to make things a little less frightening and stressful for your cat on the day of their next veterinary appointment.

Invest in a Cat Carrier

Make sure that your cat is secured in a cat carrier for their appointment. This is safer both in the car and when you walk into the veterinarian's office. Choose a cat carrier that is small enough that you can easily carry it and that your cat will feel secure and safe while inside, while also making sure it's large enough to comfortably accommodate your cat.

Write Down Notes Before Your Appointment

It's easy to get distracted when you're in a busy veterinarian's office, where dogs and cats might be making a lot of noise and when you might be busy with filling out paperwork, comforting your cat, and otherwise handling the appointment. This means that you could forget to ask about important services or to ask questions about your cat's health that you have been wondering about. Because of this, it's a good idea to jot down a few notes beforehand about your cat's symptoms or about the questions that you have so you can refer to these notes during the appointment.
